A man who contaminated sweets with sleeping medication and gave them to minors at a summer camp in the region has confessed to sexual offences against two children aged nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight minors and one adult fell ill at Stathern Lodge in July.

The senior citizen, from that region, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the courthouse on Friday.

Nevertheless, he denied one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was concerning a young boy.

The accused was kept in jail prior to a further hearing on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, outlined the defendant's actions to the court.

She said his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he managed.

Ruben engaged in a "candy game" with the children, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to consume candy "rapidly".

She informed the proceedings the man had engaged in this activity with the young males "for many years", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She said the defendant had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the children being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had concerns in recently.

Mrs Prior KC continued: "This year his family member had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to investigate in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC stated items including lubricant, Vaseline and syringes were discovered, and his stepson alerted the police about his worries.

She explained the defendant continued to play the "sweet game" with six boys that time - July 26th - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"The police had not responded by that point," she continued.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, previously told that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

Mrs Prior explained the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the family member contacted the law enforcement again.

She said Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
