Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
